WEED & SEED
We are in the second quarter of our second year of the Weed and Seed Program for the City of Prichard.
Main Street Weed and Seed Strategy

Weed and Seed, a community-based strategy sponsored by the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ), is an innovative, comprehensive multi agency approach to law enforcement, crime prevention, and community revitalization. The Community Capacity Development office (CCDO) oversees the Weed and Seed initiative.
Weed and Seed is foremost a strategy—rather than a grant program—that aims to prevent, control, and reduce violent crime, drug abuse, and gang activity in designated high-crime neighborhoods across the country. The more than 300 Weed and Seed sites range in size from several neighborhood blocks to several square miles, with populations ranging from 3,000 to 50,000.
In August of 2006, the City of Prichard was awarded $175,000 annually for a five year period to support efforts in the Main Street Weed and Seed Site. The Main Street target area, totals approximately 7 square miles with a population of 10,000 residents.

This collaborative partnership involves the Prichard Police Department, the Community Development Department, the U.S. Attorney’s Office, the FBI and other social service organizations for the sole purpose of addressing crime and community improvement issues. The four areas of concentration will include:
• Neighborhood Restoration
• Law Enforcement
• Community Policing
• Prevention, Intervention and Treatment
