ATTENTION ANIMAL OWNERSThe Prichard
Animal Control Department would like to share
some valuable information with the residents of
Prichard, regarding rules and regulations
pertaining to ownership of animals.
Within the City of Prichard there is a limit of
four (4) animals per address and each of those
animals must be registered with the City Clerk’s
Office. If a resident is in possession of an
animal and the animal is not registered with the
City of Prichard, the owner is in violation of
the city’s ordinance and a ticket will be
issued.
In order to own livestock, a permit must be
obtained from the City Clerk’s office and the
animal must have a locked pen in which it can be
housed.
There is a leash law in the state of Alabama
which states that domestic animals must be on a
leash at all times when in public. Attached to
the collar of the animal should be an updated
tag for the animal. Tags are issued from a
licensed veterinarian on a yearly basis when the
animal receives its annual vaccination shots.
Besides being the law, the tag is also a great
tool if the animal becomes lost. When an animal
with a tag is found, the animal will be taken to
the Animal Control Shelter where the animal’s
owner will be immediately contacted. The owner
then has three (3) days to retrieve the animal.
When an animal without a tag is found, notices
are placed on the doors in the immediate area
stating that the animal has been found and taken
to the Animal Shelter. The owner then has three
(3) days to claim the animal or the animal will
be put up for adoption or euphonized. If an
animal owner comes to claim an animal and the
animals’ paperwork is not in order, the owner
can be ticketed.

Animal Adoption
All animals at the shelter that have not been
claimed can be adopted, except for vicious
animals (i.e. pit bulls, rottweilers). A $25.00
adoption fee must be paid and if the animal is
not sprayed or neutered the applicant has ten
(10) days in which to have the animal fixed. If
the applicant is a Medicaid recipient, their
animal can be fixed at a reduced rate.
Animal Pick-up/
Drop-off
If you are a resident of the City of Prichard
and have an animal that needs to be picked up or
dropped off at the Animal Control Shelter, there
will not be a charge assessed. If you are not a
resident of Prichard, there will be a $25.00 fee
charged for services. Once the animal reaches
the shelter, the owner has three (3) days in
which to reclaim the animal or the animal will
be put up for adoption or euphonized. In the
case of a dead animal needing to be picked up,
there is a $6.00 disposal fee.
Abandonment of Animals

Animal roaming the neighborhood is a public
nuisance. When you see them roaming please call
Animal Control so they can be picked up. It is
illegal to abandon an animal and is punishable
by a fine and/or jail time. If you see some one
dropping an animal off, please try to get the
tag number of the vehicle and call the police.
You can do so anonymously.
Animal Fighting
Animal is a misdemeanor criminal offense. If you
know of fighting occurring, please contact the
Animal Shelter. In order to protect society, the
environment and the well being of animals, your
cooperation is needed.
Please feel free to call AC01 Officer Andrew
Stubbs at the Animal Control Department at (251)
452-7843 with any questions, comments, or
concerns.
