FAIR WAYS GOLF PROGRAM

LEADERSHIP | INCLUSION | INTEGRITY

- Program Abstract -

The Fair Ways Golf Program (FWGP) is a year-round golf initiative having three (3) facets: 1) an after-school program, 2) a pilot, school-based program (an initiative administered as a joint venture between the Mobile County Public School System and the Escambia County Florida School System), and 3) a program for persons with disabilities (currently being developed). The FWGP began with a summer program in July 2006. The FWGP Summer Program was held twice a week and lasted for an eight (8)-week period. Sixty-two (62) students, representing diverse backgrounds, participated and an average of thirty (30) students attended each session. The program was divided into four (4) thirty (30)-minute stages – more specifically, each phase reflected activities on: 1) the putting green, 2) the driving range, 3) the chipping green, and 4) the SNAG™ Program. The initiative consisted of golf-mentors which stayed with their groups throughout each stage, including during the lunches which were provided daily for participants. The FWGP Summer Program was provided to the participants at no cost.

In addition to the FWGP Summer Program, the SNAG™ Program was implemented at Indian Springs Elementary School this fall. The City of Prichard, at its High Pointe Golf Course, allocates a 3:30 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. time frame, each weekday, to provide clubs and range balls to all program participants free of charge. Players work during this time to improve their levels of skill and responsibility as a golfer (two of the benchmarks used to gauge young golfers’ achievement of the sport.) Additionally, the FWGP partnership is developing a program to include persons with disabilities. This initiative will include a summer session at the United Cerebral Palsy Camp to serve three-hundred (300) differently-able participants.

The FWGP uses a curriculum-based approach which is taught and administered by golf-mentors in small groups. The curriculum focuses on teaching the game of golf and exposing youth to the rudiments of mastering the game. Alongside the technical aspects of the sport (e.g., swinging and putting), the FWGP is designed to foster the social development of youth through its mentorship and character education components. In short, this initiative aggressively seeks to promote interest in and a love for the game of golf while exposing participants to the life skills the game teaches. The FWGP is designed to increase access to the game of golf for youth from disadvantaged communities and encourages the participation of minorities and women. A primary goal of this effort is to make the game of golf affordable and free of barriers impeding the involvement of those having a desire to learn and gain an appreciation of the sport.
