FIRE MARSHALL SAFETY TIP
Springtime has arrived. With it comes the ritual of clearing out
debris left by the effects of winter. This is a time of leaf raking,
tree trimming and grass cutting. Take care during these times as it
is also a time when there is an increase in incidents requiring emergency
services.
I would advise that you always use the appropriate safety equipment
when using power tools. Power tools require an energy
source such as electricity or gasoline. When using electricity be
sure to use the recommended sized electrical cord and ensure that it
is properly grounded and also check to make sure the power cord is
not frayed or worn out. If using gasoline as a power source, extreme
caution should be used. Never pour gas into equipment that is hot
for it may cause an explosion. Never store gasoline in a location
where there are appliances that have a pilot light such as a hot water
heater or clothes dryer because gas fumes or vapors may come in
contact with the pilot light and cause a fire.
After you finish your yard work you may want to burn your debris.
Remember that you must have a burn permit. When starting
your fire, never use gasoline because it may cause an explosion.
Never leave your fire unattended because it can blaze up and get
out of control. When burning, you must remain with your fire until
it is completely put out. Be aware of the fires surroundings...is it to
close to a dwelling, the roadway, electrical wires or a natural gas
source? Are there children in the area? Children are very inquisitive
when it comes to fire.
In conclusion, with these things in mind, your spring cleaning can
be a breeze! For more information about these or other safety tips,
you can visit the Prichard Fire and Rescue Department at
303
Turner Road
(251) 452-7817.
As always, be safe and be careful!
