Departmental Mission: To ensure the accuracy, integrity and decision usefulness of financial information produced and disseminated to elected officials, department directors and the general public.

Responsibilities:

The City's Finance Department plays an important role in the success of the City. This department is responsible for financial reporting, invoice processing and bill payment, capital improvement management and fiscal control. Fiscal control is exercised within the Director's budgetary monitoring and expenditure mandates. Fiscal accountability is achieved through the proper use of internal control procedures to ensure the accuracy of data.

The ultimate purpose of the Finance Department is to provide information that is decision useful to "shareholders". Though the City of Prichard is an incorporated municipality and does not have "shareholders" in the private sector sense, the City does have a responsibility to other individuals that have a vested interest in the financial activities of the City. These individuals include the Prichard citizens, Mayor, City Council, department heads as well as outside agencies. By providing decision useful information, all "shareholders" will have access to the proper tools needed to make fiscally sound decisions. These decisions, in turn, will allow the City to manage its resources and control its debt in a responsible manner.

Goals:

The City's fiscal staff strives daily to achieve the following goals:

To provide timely and accurate financial information

To properly maintain books, ledgers and other records in order to reflect the financial status of the City

To provide timely reports

To ensure that internal controls are constantly evaluated and tested

To continually develop and maintain accounting procedures and guidelines that comply with the most recent state, federal and national standards and reflect generally accepted accounting principles
