Clark Community Center Ground Breaking

In 2003, the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) announced the award of a $20 Million HOPE VI Revitalization Plan Grant to the Prichard Housing Authority. A portion of the grant was used to relocate approximately 278 families in the Bessemer Avenue Apartments. Once the families were relocated, their old dwelling were demolished to make way for a new complex. The new complex consists of 275 housing units. Also to be constructed on the grounds is a 13,500 square foot community center. The community center will be named after the William “Bill” Clark. Clark is a former District 98 State Representative as well as a former Commissioner for the Prichard Housing Authority.
On Tuesday, March 18, 2008, The Prichard Housing Authority along with The Mitchell Company who is the developer of the Hope VI Revitalization Plan, held a groundbreaking ceremony for the new community center that will be located within The City of Prichard’s Main Street Weed and Seed site in the Bessemer area. The facility will include space for the Neighborhood Center provisions for social and community services, and cultural and recreational programs. |
